CHAPTER 4 / STORY & CONVERSATIONS
Chapter 4: The Source
Trace the corruption to its source and attempt to contain it.
The transcript preserves the original speaker names and text. “PILOT” refers to the player character. Mission dialogue and squad-channel comms are separate story layers.
Mission dialogue · 8 lines
Mission start· beat 1
- Chief Engineer Elena
- I traced the infection vectors backwards across nine colonies. They all radiate from one point — a derelict research station older than either empire. That's the source.
- Jane Doe
- Then we burn it. Today. Now. Why is nobody already flying?
- Chief Engineer Elena
- Because everything that's flown within ten klicks of it has come back... changed. Or come back hungry. We go careful or we don't come back at all.
- PILOT
- Careful AND armed to the teeth. Elena runs the science, Jane runs the survival, I run the guns. Move out.

- Chief Engineer Elena
- Containment charges set. But look at these readings — the Corruption isn't a plague, it's coordinated. It ROUTES itself. Something is steering it.
- Jane Doe
- You're telling me the thing that ate my colony has a BRAIN somewhere?
- Chief Engineer Elena
- I'm telling you it has a general. And generals can be killed.
- PILOT
- Then containment today, decapitation someday. Elena — I want everything you can learn about where that signal leads.
Squad comms · 8 lines
Mission start· beat 1
- Chief Engineer Elena
- Traced the nanite signal spine to an old pre-EMP research site. Whatever "the Source" is, it is under that mountain.
- Jane Doe
- I know this site. It was on my colony's charts, marked as a weather station. Weather stations do not need blast doors.
- PILOT
- How deep are we going?
- Jane Doe
- Deeper than the people who built it wanted anyone to go. Bring every light we own.
After floor 8· beat 2
- "Observer"
- You are closer to the truth than any expedition in eleven years. Turn back, and the Corruption remains merely a plague. Continue, and you will owe me answers you do not yet have.
- PILOT
- Who IS this? How are you on our encrypted channel?
- Chief Engineer Elena
- Signal origin is... everywhere in the facility at once. That is not possible with our relay net.
- Jane Doe
- Keep moving. Whatever it is, it said "closer to the truth". I have waited two years to be closer.
